As she came in this morning she saw that the lamp was still burning in the study; so she stopped at the door. She thought gleefully of the dress she would get to wear for the Ball (Prom?) and could not wait to tell her foster family about how excited she was. Thank goodness there’s plenty of opportunity! And we two can talk. Her eyes were lit with a gleam of humour. ‘Well, she’d better learn fast if she wants any truck with me. Voices floated down, but there was no sound of pursuit.
